WritersCorps In The News:
Success
Stories
DC WritersCorps, through
its literary workshops and hands on youth leadership opportunities,
provides mentorship to talented youth writers, journalists, and performers.
Below are some of our success stories from students who've participated
in our programs.
Congratulations to Evelyn Robinson,
Duke Ellington Graduate and one of the founding youth members of
2kNation. Evelyn graduates this week with honors (Cum Laude, GPA 3.443)
from Winston-Salem State University with her BA degree in Mass Communications
with a minor in English. Evelyn, who last summer mentored 2kNation youth,
plans to get her MFA in film and electronic media!
Congratulations to Sheri Dennis,
another Duke grad and 2kNation alumnus. Sheri will be spending this
summer interning in at a TV station in Japan as part of a study abroad
program at Hampton University where she is a student. Sheri was also
accepted into an academy for writing excellence but has to pass that
up for the Japanese study program. Sheri spent two years as host and
engineer with 2kNation. She says of her 2kNation experience, "If
it weren't for the work that I did at WPFW I don't think I would have
made it to college. Thanx."
Congratulations to current 2kNation host Danielle
Thomas, former YAP member Tina Pryce, and WritersCorps participant Jade
Foster for being published in the celebrated and national
anthology "Growing Up Girl" edited by Michelle Sewell.
Jade, Tina, and Danielle are
in fine company with some of the nation's finest black women writers
who have added their work to this important contemporary anthology focusing
on the lives and literature of black women. Go to www.girlchildpress.com
to find out how to purchase the anthology. Jade Foster is a 2003 Duke
Graduate who attends Sarah Lawrence University. She is currently in
Ghana as part of her study abroad program this semester.
Congratulations to Shari Wright,
last semester Shari was formally admitted into Florida
State University's English/Creative Writing Department where she'll
be studying with canonical writers such as, Robert Olen Butler and Virgil
Suarez. During her studies at Duke Ellington, Shari participated in
a DC WritersCorps project with students from the Multicultural Community
Services. Shari's poetry will also be featured in a national anthology
edited by poet Natasha Tarpley.
These accomplishments celebrate the 4 year collaboration DC WritersCorps
had with Duke Ellington High School for the Arts and celebrates the
artistic and leadership excellence of the student participants.

At an evening of literary excellence in Prince George's County last
week, area business es, members of the poetry community and area residents
welcomed poets and poetry into their midst. The D.C. WritersCorps collaborated
with The Boulevard at Capital Centre to present The Blvd At The Capital
Centre Poetry Slam-Jam Fundraiser. '
WritersCorps poet and board member Lisa Pegram welcomed guests and introduced
masters of ceremony Dave Zirin, who kept pace with the poets while calling
for judges' scores.
Powerful poetry was clearly the order of the day, when a multi-generational
crowd of poets, poetry fans and proud citizens cheered and applauded
as featured poet, Amiri Baraka, ascended to the stage for the free-to-the-community
